How much does windshield replacement cost in Detroit?

Can a cracked windshield be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Windshield glass is a sandwich: an outer ply, a plastic interlayer, an inner ply. Most stone hits fracture only the outer ply, and that is what makes repair possible. Resin is drawn into the fracture, cured hard, and the ply stops flexing along the break. Four things decide it:
- How big. A break that a quarter covers is a normal repair. So is a single crack about as long as a dollar bill.
- Where. Anything in the wiper-swept zone directly ahead of the steering wheel is judged strictly, because a filled break still leaves a faint mark.
- How close to the edge. The border of the glass is under the most stress. Cracks that touch it usually keep going.
- How deep and how dirty. A break into the inner ply, or one packed with a winter of salt film, will not take resin properly.

Why do windshields crack so often in Detroit?
Start with the trucks. Michigan permits heavier multi-axle trucks than most states, and the gravel and steel haulers that work I-75, I-94 and I-96 drop aggregate that the next set of tires fires backward. The stretch of I-75 through Southwest Detroit carries bridge-bound freight all day.

Then the temperature. A chip holds a drop of meltwater. Overnight it freezes and pries the break wider.
